82 White Chain Born in Emptiness Returns to Subdue Evil (White Chain for short) is an angel and a peacekeeper of the Concordant Harmonies. She is the first person Allison encounters outside of Earth and functions as Allison's guardian while she carries a Key of Kings.

Because of her immense knowledge of Throne's geography, laws, and culture, as well as her skills as a peacekeeper, White Chain is uniquely equipped to protect Allison and provide context about the world around her.

Appearance[]

FvYKL

White Chain with their crest flared.

White Chain's armor is characterized by ambiguous sexual features which cause others to perceive them as a (human) female.[1] Allison originally remarks that White Chain's body has stone-like qualities and since she referred to them as a "lady", it is implied her voice is sexually indistinct or feminine.[2]

On the outside, White Chain is grey and appears to be embedded with various holes. However, this is merely her armor, as her true form is immaterial and needs to be bound to a physical object.[3][4] When White Chain is emotionally charged, essence erupts from her eyes, head, and the orifices in their body as a sort of blue fire containing turquoise eyeballs with red irises.[5][6]

Initially it seems as if White Chain has no eyes, but it is later revealed that they open if the situation is dire.[7] Usually closed or obscured, White Chain's right eye seems to open when the angel is serious or upset. So far White Chain's left eye has only opened once when they were reanimated and fearful of punishment from the Seven. Underneath her helmet, it is revealed White Chain's face is feminine, with a scar over her left eye (sustained when lying to Preem Nand) and fire resembling hair.

Whitechain sari

White Chain's new look

When on duty, White Chain can be seen wearing a more complex outfit than usual. Their uniform includes lightweight armor and full-length pants while her head crest is fuller, forming an ornate semicircle.[1] It is later revealed this crest can be flared at will if White Chain needs to enforce their authority.[8] Around her person she wears a red-beaded necklace that contains a badge of the Concordant Harmonies.[9][10]

After she rescues Allison, this outfit becomes simplified and White Chain no longer keeps her crest flared. She goes bare-chested instead of wearing armor, but keeps the necklace.[10] On her waist, the angel wears simple brown shorts that are held to her body by a wrap.

In preparation for the siege on Yre, White Chain removes her crest and wears a yellow headscarf, presumably to avoid drawing attention while with Allison and the others in the Red City. Her shins and feet are bandaged, and she wears yellow shorts with a draped red sash over her torso.

A New Incarnation !

White Chain's design changes further, becoming more fashionable (and more human-looking) after the attack on Yre. Her current outfit, a patterned blue sari, was presumably tailored for them by Nyave.

Without her armor, she is notably more humanlike in appearance. Her skin is blue and she has eyes across her wings, hands, hair, and back.

After her apotheosis, White Chain transforms from an angelic form into a much more human appearance. Her skin is black with white lines tracing across her body and she she has long black hair in braids. She has gray-blue eyes and, perhaps most notably, an award winning smile.

Personality[]

MMnuB

White Chain bows to Preem Nungsis after Allison bumps into him.

White Chain is tough, pragmatic, and efficient. She can be cold, interrogating Number 1 without hesitating,[8] or polite, as demonstrated when they encountered Preem Nungsis.[11]

However, this is not the case with everyone she meets; White Chain is shown to be hotheaded, stubborn, and arrogant when people fail to cooperate. She seethes when Cio interrupts her storytelling[12] and loses her temper when Cio and Allison fail to understand the danger of an insecure key.[10]

After seeing the turmoil in Hell 71, she even goes so far as to berate Allison when it is White Chain's negligence that gets Allison captured in the first place.[7]

Cio's treatment of White Chain calls her personality into question. Based on how often White Chain recites the Prayer, it would appear she dislikes fighting. However Cio refers to them as a "mad dog", so White Chain may be overzealous when it comes to keeping the peace.[13]

One of White Chain's salient traits, especially to fellow angels, is their conflicted relationship with the sexless nature of angels and the consequent genderless, masculine group identity. White Chain initially becomes agitated when people refer to her as female and are quick to correct those who assume she is such.[14][2] However, they also do not consider themself a "brother" of the rest of the Concordant Angels, although how much of it is about gender and how much is about kinship is unclear. However, she dos not argue when Michael accuses them of clinging to gender [15], and shortly afterward says they feel "a little feminine"[16].

During later chapters, White Chain is increasingly refferred to by female pronouns by characters such as Allison and Cio. Adopting feminine patterns of dress, and often appearing with their helm removed - revealing their more feminine face and hairstyle. During book 4 (King of Swords) 10 Vigillant Gaze, a fellow angel, admonishes 6 Juggernaught Star for attempting to supress White Chain's female inclination and refers to White Chain as "our Sister".

Abilities[]

As an angel and peacekeeper, White Chain is widely feared and vilified for her abilities. Preem Vash, the influential leader of the Golden Pearl, shows nervousness upon meeting White Chain[1], while her presence seems to cause a stir in the House of Cockroaches.[17] She is shown defeating an entire room of Vash's men singlehandedly, and the angel manages to hold a conversation with Cio while banishing Praman Nand's daughters. During the Battle of Hell 71, White Chain seems to be more concerned about the threat of the Seven than the danger of standing in the middle of a combat zone.

Still, Delicious effortlessly defeats them with a well-timed ambush, and White Chain is unable to overcome their counterpart in actual combat.[18][19] Upon meeting Allison, White Chain claims to be unsure of how long they could restrain a Vatra, though this hesitation may have stemmed more from the presence of the key itself.[2]

47 Empty Palms

White Chain takes out Sweetie Pie.

White Chain is a practitioner of the 47 Empty Palms,[2] a discipline that she invokes after reciting the Prayer of Forgiveness:

Pree Aesma
Ys-Asram (the Blooded One)
Ys-Prama, Hansa, and Prat Payam (who temper my heart)
YISUN Atru Vyam
Forgive me for this violence I am about to inflict.[14][19]

In using this system, White Chain can rapidly maneuver their hands to attack nearby enemies or to defend herself. 47 Empty Palms does not appear to be limited to upper-body movement, as White Chain is shown using a flying knee kick and a two-fingered neck jab to overcome Sweetie Pie, one of Nand's devils.

Through a mixture of their natural abilities and the 47 Empty Palms, White Chain's abilities in combat are potent, being able to match Delicious's raw speed using only defensive blocking techniques. When Delicious attempts to stab White Chain with the tip of a sword, White Chain is shown countering the blade with just the length of her little finger.[20][19]

47 Empty Palms' finishing blow involves a powerful thrust called "Empty Palm Vanquishes the Wicked."[20] The force behind this move is so great, enemies in the vicinity are sent flying or forced to take cover while the air is displaced in a miniature sonic boom. Nevertheless, its power is insufficient to seriously injure Delicious.[19]

White Chain has been observed using Leisure Kicks style, Krayu Mat, and a remarkable improvised variation of Krayu Mat: KRAYU MAT, TWIN SOUL FORM.[1]

Ontological Outlook and Philosophies[]

"My original form was a divine shard. An emanation of the god UN, forged into shape by the chisel of Koss..."

White Chain[21]

82 White Chain is grounded in their divine origin and purposeful creation as a peacekeeper. This purpose has been under great strain since the Universal War, the Pact of the Seven Part world, the de facto enthronement of the Seven Black Kings, and the rise of the Guilds all shattered the Law as 2 Michael puts it. While 2 Michael conspires with the Thorns and Metatron 1 to wipe the worlds clean of life if necessary to resurrect YISUN, 82 White Chain would seek to protect the worlds and the beings in it.

"I care about the world! It's worth saving and it's our responsibility!"

White Chain[22]

As 82 White Chain pursues the goal of preserving and protecting the worlds and the beings in it, mentioned in the KSBD epic is the Trigram Mantra.

"The Trigram Mantra, the foundation of all righteous fist arts. Wisdom, Restraint, Emptiness. Detachment from Earthly concerns and desires. It is what elevates Angelic martial arts over the rest."

White Chain[23]

History[]

Ancient times[]

Like all other angels, White Chain was smithed out of the Cold White Flame by Koss in his workshop. It is likely she spent the earliest kalpas of her existence in the Void fighting the endless hordes of unbound devils pouring into creation.[24]

After the death of the gods and the arrival of Zoss to Throne, the angels were given physical forms as part of the Concordance. This was when White Chain began her function as a peacekeeper as a member of the Concordant Knights. Unlike most angels, she kept doing her duty even after the Universal War and the shattering of the Old Law, now as a member of the Concordant Harmonies. As a result, White Chain is the angel with the highest death count seen so far, having died and reincarnated 81 times.

Kill Six Billion Demons[]

White Chain is first seen in the den of Omun Vash, the master of the Golden Pearl Pleasure Guild. She accuses Vash of smuggling and slavery, but the gangster denies any criminal activity. When Vash realizes he cannot dissuade White Chain, he motions for a minion to kill them, but Allison tumbles through an alcove, crashing into the assassin and saving White Chain from a surprise attack.[14]

Using the 47 Empty Palms, White Chain clears the room of guards, but Vash escapes in the fray. White Chain thanks Allison for saving her, failing to notice she has been knocked unconscious. White Chain then witnesses the Key of Kings lodged in Allison's forehead and rushes her to a private room.[25][26]

Three days later, Allison awakes with a bandage over her key. White Chain offers her coffee and sternly suggests that it is available only if she proves compliant. When Allison attempts to introduce herself, White Chain interrupts and accuses her of being Vatra, adding that she needs to be detained pending an investigation. This merely frustrates Allison, who throws a coffee pot across the room.

Relenting, Allison and White Chain drink coffee on a balcony which overlooks the expanse of Throne. Allison questions why White Chain seems hesitant to speak with her; White Chain explains Allison traveled by means of powerful magic reserved for the most fearsome people in the world. As White Chain attempts to discern Allison's purpose, the angel discovers how little Allison knows about her position and formulates a plan to visit Cio in Hell 71.

On their way out, White Chain offers Allison a cup of Blue Devil Liquor and the two depart on a decommissioned Prime Angel which has been repurposed as a bus.[27] Allison initially hesitates to board, but the fear of being left behind causes her to reconsider.

Allison and White Chain share a meaningful conversation about who the former is.

The two separate briefly and Allison tries to wake herself up, thinking she is dreaming. Meanwhile, White Chain apprehends a blue devil by the name of Number 1 and questions the devil on the whereabouts of Praman Nand. After a routine search, both she and Number 1 agree Allison does not pose a threat, something which deeply worries the angel.[8]

White Chain then asks Allison about her place of origin and discovers she is from Earth. The angel reveals that Allison's world is just one of many Earths and guesses that Allison's origin world has yet to be conquered. Furthermore, White Chain notes that their current location, Throne, lies at the center of a vast array of universes.

Allison and White Chain soon depart for Hell 71 after White Chain retells a brief history of the world. They are halted momentarily when Allison bumps into Preem Nungsis, but White Chain apologizes profusely. Allison piques the curiosity of Pree Ayis, who assumes she is White Chain's concubine. White Chain denies this claim and the two head out shortly after to the lair of Praman Nand, master of the Gilded Cage Guild.[28]

Atop a huge, overcrowded precipice, a blue-skinned man warns that White Chain is not welcome. White Chain pays him little attention while Allison stands astounded at the sight. White Chain then calls for them to descend and mentions that she should be on her guard.

As White Chain navigates the crowd, Allison becomes distracted by the various vendors and is approached by Maya. White Chain calls Allison back to her and the two soon meet up with Nand. White Chain quickly explains that her next move will appear controversial but that she will have to trust her.

White Chain bows to Praman Nand before making him a deal.

Showing false deference to Nand, White Chain wagers a trade: Nand will get possession of Allison while White Chain will gain access to Nand's secretary ( Cio ). The lie apparently causes a crack to appear on White Chain's head, revealing her left eye. Nand obliges to the trade, pleased to play with a new "doll", and orders his daughters Sweetie Pie and Honey Bunch to escort her to the brothel.

Nand's daughters are first to reach the brothel where the bookkeeper Cio had already gotten word of their arrival from Number 1. Cio welcomes the daughters nervously but White Chain suddenly disposes of one of them, showing she had no intention of fulfilling the deal.

White Chain reveals the key to Cio.

As White Chain defeats Honey Bunch, Cio becomes hysterical and sarcastically asks whether anyone is trying to run a business. White Chain merely responds that she is merely doing her duty as a peacekeeper. Cio begins to retort, but White Chain reveals the key under Allison's bandage and comments that they need her help, as Cio is the only person to have stolen a Key of Kings.

In trying to figure out what just happened, Cio and Allison begin shouting over each other and White Chain becomes gravely serious. While recounting the history of the demiurges, White Chain is suddenly cut off by Cio, who claims her version of the story is boring. White Chain resumes where she left off, and finally notes that an insecure key could rekindle a second universal war.

Delicious ambushes White Chain, leaving them an empty shell.

Suddenly a needle appears in White Chain's head, seemingly killing her. The assassin is revealed to be Delicious, an angel accompanied by his master Omun Vash.[18] With White Chain's body nothing more than an empty shell, Delicious and Vash attempt to kidnap Allison as a panicked Cio figures out what to do.

Shortly after, Hell 71 erupts in an all-out war over the key. When Allison is almost killed by Eris-Lo Kai, Cio appears in the midst of battle carrying White Chain's empty shell.[29] Then, using the Art to form a wall of paper soldiers, Cio attempts to hold off the attackers, but berates Allison for her uselessness.[30]

By drawing the needle out of her eye, Allison manages to bring White Chain back to life. But instead of showing empathy, White Chain blasts her for causing all the trouble and calls her an "idiot girl". Allison then responds by saying, "I have a fucking name."[7]

82 eyes open

White Chain reanimates in a stream of blue fire.

For a moment White Chain relents and admits they have placed Allison in a difficult position. But this thought is cut short by Delicious, who assaults White Chain from the rear. As they fight, both angels find themselves evenly matched while Cio and Allison make their way out of Hell 71.

Suddenly, Praman Nand intervenes and ends the fight with a massive stream of fire that burns away most of the combatants. Nand then starts a bidding and offers a significant bounty to the person who retrieves Allison. When other people begin to bid for the key, Delicious comments that White Chain should consider their line of work because it includes much less failure.

After being separated from Allison, White Chain is brought to the Concordance of Angels, whereupon their master, 2 Michael, banishes her for failing to capture Allison. In the void she encounters 6 Juggernaut Star, who explains the Thorn Knights' ideology in an attempt to recruit White Chain. He also offers White Chain her body back in exchange for joining. White Chain continually refuses Juggernaut Star's offer but hastily relents when the latter threatens to kill Delicious. Regardless, Juggernaut Star beats Delicious to death, and Metatron 1 speaks directly to White Chain, offering her a powerful new (albeit Thorny) new body.

White Chain refuses and flees, only to be brought down by Juggernaut Star and confronted by Michael, who reveals that her banishment was merely leverage to pressure her to accept. Michael further explains his plan for White Chain, revealing his belief that Zaid is the correct heir and instructing White Chain to kill Allison if needed. White Chain refuses once more and successfully escapes, only to return upon seeing the apathy of her brothers.

Seeker of Thrones[]

King of Swords[]

During the events described in 'The King of Swords' wherein Allison and 82 White Chain entered the 'Ring of Power' Tournament, 82 White Chain progressed to the very end and was acknowledged as the sole valid competitor eligible to engage in personal combat with the Emperor Solomon David. At the culmination of her one on one combat, White Chain and Solomon David struck each other with tremendous blows. White Chain's body/shell of stone armor was shattered and White Chain spontaneously manifested a human (woman) body. White Chain is then declared the victor of the tournament by Solomon due to pressure from the audience. [2]

Breaker of Infinites[]

Trivia[]

  • White Chain is in her liquid state, meaning she is still considered young for an angel.[27][3]
  • White Chain, like all angels, is not permitted to engage in monetary transactions [31].
