Description[]

Jadis

Jadis's physical body, masked and entombed in glass

Jadis is entombed in glass, her body rotting away after being twisted from witnessing the Shape of the Universe. Because the event granted her unerring knowledge of the future, she is, in fact, omniscient.[5]

Prior to being entombed, she appeared as a pale-faced woman with straight black hair in a kimono-like dress and wielded a curved-blade sword.[6] She was described as a "wizard king",[7] the most prodigious spellcaster amongst the demiurges.[8]

Jadis simply does almost nothing but struggle to even whisper her prophecies while having her servants translate the rest to the best of their abilities.

After saving Allison from the battle on Rayuba, Jadis once again appears as she was pre-entombment through some form of intangible illusion or spirit[9] and is able to converse with Allison.

Personality[]

In her youth, Jadis was a compassionate person, often times tending to the needs of commoners instead of pursuing more power, this was a course of action that her father would brand as a waste of time and attempt to beat out of her with cruel punishments. Later, Jadis would cast aside all emotion and tenderness in pursuit of her goals.[10] During this time she was described as extremely ambitious and organized,[11] although she still maintained that her ultimate goal in witnessing the shape of creation was to better ease the suffering of mortals and that she was acting in defiance of prophecy.[12]

Long after gaining omniscience, while conversing with Allison, Jadis appears gentle and soft spoken, apologizing to Allison for any upset or distress she caused. Despite her smile in this form, Jadis's omniscience means she possess a distinctly fatalistic outlook.[13] In fact, Jadis claims that due to her condition, she doesn't fundamentally experience anything and as a result, doesn't really even exist.[14] And although its debatable whether the concept of desire can even be applied to her,[15] it is said that she sincerely wishes to die.[16]

History[]

Early Life[]

Jadis and her father

A young Jadis is scolded by her father

Jadis came from a family of philosopher royalty who had established a presence on Throne before her birth. By Jadis's time, her family had already spent ten generations constructing a massive machine, which was built to see the shape of existence as an object comprehensible to the human mind.[10] Jadis was mentored by her father who believed in a prophecy that Jadis would be the enkindler, the one who finish the great machine and use it to gain power akin to God. Yet, to his disappointment, Jadis spent a great deal of time tending to the needs of commoners and questioning his philosophy of acquiring power for its own sake. As a result, he would subject Jadis to repeated painful punishments.[17][12] It is likely due to this cruelty that she killed him at a young age.[18] When Jadis came of age, she abandoned all emotion in pursuit of the machine's completion.[10]

Universal War[]

By the end of the Universal War, she stood victorious with six other demiurges and was bestowed the title of "Lord of Infinity". She eventually helped establish the Pact of the Seven Part World, an agreement that carved the multiverse into seven pieces, one for each victor.

Moment of witness

The moment Jadis and her cult witnessed the shape of creation

Seeing The Shape[]

Jadis prophecy

Jadis displays the prophecy of the successor on her glass block while a follower of hers interprets its meaning

At some point after that, Jadis finished construction of the machine, and along with the upper echelons of her cult, activated it to see the Shape of the Universe. While they succeeded, the sight mutilated Jadis and killed all of her accompanying priests.[19]

Kill Six Billion Demons[]

At the concordance of the demiurges, Jadis is seen encased in glass, whispering about the prophecy of a new successor of Zoss destined to kill them all, which her interpreters helped translate to the rest of the demiurges.[20]

King of Swords[]

She reappears at the second concordance, whispering about Zoss' plans. Later, after the conclusion of 313th The Ring of Power, before Solomon can respond to White Chain's request, Jadis teleports into the area. She begins to whisper a warning before Jagganoth also arrives by cutting space, and destroys the arena.[21][22]

Breaker of Infinities[]

Jadis water

Jadis's apparition greets a severely wounded Allison on Rayuba

Jadis fights alongside the rest of the demiurges, Allison, Cio, and White Chain to stop Jagganoth on Rayuba. Throughout the battle, Jadis creates a field of ice spikes to stop a rain of arrows,[23] gives Mottom a "Six Hells Trigram"[24] which later becomes the binding used on Jagganoth, and aids the combined effort to reactivate the binding on Jagganoth is some manner[25]. After the disastrous conclusion of the battle, Jadis appears to a severely injured Allison in the form of a blue, ghostly apparition before teleporting them both away.[26]

3 years later[]

Jadis reveal

Jadis reveals the exact second of Allison's death

After Allison awakes, she is greeted by Jadis who explains that all of Allison's injuries have been healed and mended,[27] and that it is now three years after the battle on Rayuba. Jadis confirms Cio's death and mournfully notes that Jagganoth's forces, now lead by Incubus, have begun their campaign to destroy the multiverse.[28] She then brings Allison to the machine built to see the shape of existence and explains its purpose.[10] Allison is initially incredulous of Jadis's omniscience, but the latter demonstrates her knowledge by stating the exact date of Allison's death (down to the second),[29] recalling an event in Allison's childhood where a classmate of hers passed away, and predicting Allison's exact reactions before they occur.[13]

As Allison reacts poorly to this information, Jadis continues that "action" is an illusion, and that the totality of time and space are akin to a piece of amber upon which all decisions are permanently engraved. In this way, things in their totality are immutable, and people simply do what they do.[30] When Allison asks what the point of anything is, Jadis replies that there is no point. She asserts that life is finite and without any greater purpose before offering to show Allison firsthand.[31] Before the latter can respond, the great machine activates, and an aperture on its surface expands into a yawning void, pulling Allison from her wheelchair and before a vision of the entirety of the wheel.[32] Allison's eyes begin to boil out of their sockets before she quickly shuts them, finding herself at the pinnacle of the temple before a plate of breakfast. Jadis inquires as to what was seen, to which Allison responds "Nothing" before breaking down at the revelation.[33] Jadis reiterates the meaninglessness of Allison's struggle, pointing out how Jagganoth is invincible, and how much loss Allison has already sustained.[34] She elaborates that "evil" is not morally destined to lose, and that the world won't end with trumpets and the judgement of darkness forever, the world simply moves to chaos to chaos, with Allison's suffering sustained during this struggle being pointless.[35]

Jadis breakfast

Jadis and Allison in the atrium, with breakfast

Cradling her head, Allison asks what Jadis wants from her, to which the demiurge responds that as far as she can want anything, she wants Allison to eat breakfast.[35] While Jadis herself is omniscient, the illusion of causality still remains for Allison, and so from her perspective, it still seems possible to choose many different things, and one of those is to eat breakfast and no longer choose suffering. But Jadis is cut off by a despondent Allison and her illusory body vanishes.[36]

Later, as Allison is wasting away in bed, Jadis appears twice more, each time encouraging Allison to let go of the struggle and to choose a different path. Allison dismisses Jadis each time but finally chooses to eat the food provided.[37]

Jadis condemns Allison

Jadis's apparition condemns Allison for holding onto the the hope of a happy future.

Six months later and after Zaid breaks into the temple complex and converses with Allison, Jadis appears again as an apparition when Allison begins tearing the previously concealed prosthetics off of her body.[38] During this exchange, Jadis seems saddened that Allison has chosen the path of suffering after all and that she has not fully healed. Allison responds that she doesn't think she ever will, but that she sees much more clearly now.[17] At this, Jadis's illusion changes to a vision of her earlier life, up until she activated the machine for the first time.[39] Jadis then says that Allison was the first person she has actually spoken to in a thousand years and will miss her presence as the latter returns to pointless violence. Allison rebuts that while she may never be happy again, she can at least hold onto the hope that one day she will be. Jadis chides this hope as foolish and irrational,[40] but Allison declares that while it may be so, it will give her the motivation to move on and that nothing can take that away from her. With these words, Allison mantles her power and breaks out of Jadis's temple complex with Zaid.[41]

Abilities[]

Pre-Entombment[]

Before her entombment, Jadis was considered the second most powerful of the demiurges, being the most prodigious spellcaster amongst the demiurges.[8]

Post-Entombment[]

Omniscience[]

Jadis is completely omniscient,[42] knowing everything that has, is, and will happen with absolute precision. She is never wrong about anything.[43]

Spell Casting[]

Jadis ice spikes

Jadis saves all but one of her allies from being impaled

Jadis is seen using several powerful spells during the battle on Rayuba. She is able to create a field of ice spikes to catch Jagganoth's rain of arrows,[23] she gives Mottom a "Six Hells Trigram" which the latter is able to turn into a binding capable of restraining Jagganoth,[24] and finally, Jadis contributes in the attempt to re-seal Jagganoth (by reactivating the binding on his body) in some manner.[25] After rescuing Allison, Jadis is able to appear as she was pre-entombment.
