Jagganoth is a demiurge and one of seven victors in the Universal War. As the embodiment of Wrath, he is cunning strategist and formidable warrior, Jagganoth is the most powerful member of the Seven with mastery over both magical and physical combat.[5] He currently controls 111,111 universes and possesses a massive stockpile of weapons and modern technology[6], in order to improve it.[7]

Appearance

UFYuS

Jagganoth towers over Mottom as he inquires about a Thorn Knight search party.

Jagganoth is thirty-feet-tall (9.1m)[8] and heavily built, big enough to hold a Thorn Knight like a toy. Jagganoth overshadows the other demiurges in size, though they seem accustomed to his presence. Though he first appears to be tusked, this is actually a feature of his oft-worn helmet, and despite his massive size he is a human.[9]

Jagganoth asks

Jagganoth's true face.

Usually, Jagganoth wears a helmet resembling an elephant's skull, containing two sets of tusks that emerge out of a row of exposed teeth, a flattened nose-like protrusion pointing downward, and two sharp horns pointed upward, between which his burning key rests. The jaws of his mask have been observed to move when he speaks(when?). Under his mask, Jagganoth is completely bald, even lacking eyebrows, with protruding canine teeth, and heavy scaring across his entire head.[10] His left eye appears to be nonfunctional. Jagganoth is almost always seen with a burning, dull-yellow halo of atum, while most other characters capable of these halos only create them in moments of intensity.

Jagganoth wears little to no clothing aside from his helmet and a black girdle covering his groin. When he is prepared for battle, he bears a golden armor mostly covering his lower legs, hands, and the right side of his body, as well as a thick fur mantle seemingly attached to his helmet.[11] Jagganoth keeps thick chains wrapped around both forearms and gold about his left shoulder.

Jagganoth war form

Jagganoth's massive war form.

During the battle above Rayuba, Jagganoth is shown transforming into what Incubus calls a 'war form,'[12] Jagganoth may have called a 'transcendant core,'[13] and the hover text seems to name 'Yenenman Mantle.'[14] In this form, Jagganoth is incredibly muscular with bright red skin, and becomes extremely larger than he was before (Aspected Chaos is already taller than other characters and does not seem taller than his foot). His head becomes like a pyre of horned and tusked skulls facing in all directions, his atum burning in a great bonfire extending above him. He bears two two halos now, with many smaller wisps of atum in their orbit. He wears a set of black shorts decorated sparsely with a flower design, and a short skirt-like cloth on top of that held up by an ornate girdle. He wears a long flowing hagoromo, and his body is decorated with many beads gold chains. He possess a vast number (500 according to commentary[15]) of arms, each with golden bracers and wielding a sword or other melee weapon.[16]

Personality

Jagganoth's world view and personality were both heavily influenced by the time he spent in the Dead Men mercenary group, as recounted in The Tale of Yaun. From commentary attributed to Jagganoth himself (then still known as Yaun), it is clear that The Red God views death as central to existence, and omnipresent from the moment one is born. The commentary continues, that one should not deny or try to forget death, but remember that death is far more permanent than life and always lies within. As a result, one must swallow death and make it part of oneself. [17] Jagganoth also seems to regard violence with a certain degree of reverence[18] and believes that a ruler must singularly dedicate themself to combat and war.[19]

Jagganoth anger

The Red God's anger is most apparent when discussing his enemy, Metatron

Despite representing the sin of wrath, Jagganoth is not constantly enraged, often appearing jaded and weary.[20] This can be attributed to his knowledge of the time loop that the multiverse is trapped in, and his memories of reliving the same events over and over again for uncountable repetitions.[21] In combat Jagganoth still fights with great fury and seems to find satisfaction in fighting powerful opponents,[22] yet here too he is not driven by pure anger, viewing his battles as part of his work that must be completed.[18] In this sense Jagganoth is also dutiful, as he was back in his childhood.[23]

In contrast to his death and violence orientated philosophy, Jagganoth still detests the current state of the Wheel, viewing it as rotten, enslaved and illusory. Instead, he desires to recreate the multiverse in a form that will be free of pain and suffering.[24]

It seems that Jagganoth cares a lot about improvement. He seems to seek power, military and brutal power by all means. Consider his physical changes: from a fat lord[25], to a strong, muscled warrior[26], to finally a monstrous giant [27]. Additionally, he works hard at improving technology, something that other demiurges tend to ignore.[28]

Abilities

As one of the Seven, Jagganoth is among the most powerful beings in existence, possessing the ability to teleport with his key, complete mastery over space-time and vast magical knowledge. However, even compared to the other six, Jagganoth stands head and shoulders above them in terms of combat prowess, described as "the greatest warrior creation has ever known"[29] and is capable of fighting the rest of the Seven simultaneously[5]. His most notable trait is his absolute immortality and invincibility,[30] which makes defeating him by traditional means impossible.

Blood draining sword soul

One of Jagganoth's many combat arts

In addition the abilities common to all demiurges and his impressive defensive capabilities, Jagganoth demonstrates a plethora of unique offensive abilities. These include:

  • Weaponized teleportation by slicing through dimensions and unleashing a tremendous detonation as he arrives at a destination.[31]
  • Duplicating himself with afterimages to fire off a gigantic volley of arrows.[32]
  • Prevent other key wielders from teleporting.[33]
  • Levitating and controling multiple blades with great speed and precision using the 'Supreme Divine Art, Blood Draining Sword Soul'.[34]
  • Body heat that can boil the blood of those nearby.[30]
  • Generating fire powerful enough to scorch his fellow demiurges.[35]

Furthermore, Jagganoth is able to transform into a 'War Form' (at least for a short period of time). In this form, Jagganoth becomes much larger and has enhanced attacks. He is able to fire beams of energy from his mouth[36] and create blasts of light and force from his body, strong enough to throw back all the other demiurges. [37]

Blood sated sword soul effects

Blood Sated Sword Soul cleaves mountains in half.

But perhaps the most powerful attack Jagganoth has in this form is 'Supreme Divine Art, Blood Sated Sword Soul', which is described as follows:

"80,000 blows are struck at once. Leaving no space that is not a sword. Men and horses will be split in two. And the land will be put to waste. Since there is nowhere to evade- be they man or immortal- all will be cut- and be slain instantly."[38]

This attack is able to devastate the surface of Rayuba from orbit, and severely injure or kill several demiurges.

However, victory is still not effortless for Jagganoth. Notably he is susceptible to being temporarily immobilized by a binding created by the other demiurges and Aspected Chaos.[24] Incubus speculates that the master key also possesses the power to permanently bind Jagganoth.[12] Additionally, despite being invulnerable, Jagganoth still feels the pain of his enemies' attacks, causing him to avoid his opponent's blows when possible.[39]

History

Background/Universal War[]

Jagganoth's backstory is revealed in the Tale of Yaun. The tale relates the humble origins of a peasant youth named Yaun. Yaun's family, his mother, and all the other folk of his home village were slain by rampaging mercenaries who then forced him into their company millennia ago. The company was then led by Jantris, who is also referred to as a 'Star Warrior' which implies he was one of the demiurges who fought in the universal war. As Jantris trained him, Yaun eventually took on his master's name, and became 'Yaun Ten Jantris'.

When the war was in full swing, Jantris became fearful of his own death and retreated to his fortress, Gamion, using blood alchemy to extend his life at the cost of the lives of his subjects. Yaun was disgusted by this and assaulted the fortress of Gamion, slaughtering 5,000 men in a single day. Incubus and Maya were sent to protect Gamion, but Yaun explained why Jantris deserved to die, and convinced them to retreat rather than die trying to defend Jantris. Maya later killed Jantris herself.

At some point, Yaun began to be addressed by others as Jagganoth (although his birth name was still known by Solomon who addresses him as such[20]). He also lost his left eye.

IyOU8

Jagganoth stands among the Seven at the end of the Universal War.

By the end of the Universal War, Jagganoth stood alongside Jadis, Mottom, Incubus, Solomon David, Gog-Agog, and Mammon, unable to defeat them. He later agreed to the Pact of the Seven Part World, becoming heir to 111,111 universes.[40]

Holy Mission[]

At some point after the Universal War, Jagganoth was contacted by an 'Angel of YISUN' (most likely Metatron) in a dream and was given a 'Holy Mission' to destroy the multiverse. The angel then gave him thirty iron feathers, which Jagganoth forged into nails and drove into his flesh, becoming invincible. Since then he has been preparing non-stop to wage war against all of creation.[41]

Kill Six Billion Demons[]

At the Concordance of the Demiurges, Jagganoth is absent but eventually appears on the horizon. With burning footsteps and a Thorn Knight in his grip he arrives, laying waste to the environment while accusing the rest of the Seven of weakness. When Mottom asks why he has come, Jagganoth responds by claiming it was he who called the meeting in the first place.[8]

Jagganoth called it

Jagganoth reveals that he called the meeting.

Tossing the knight to the ground, Jagganoth presses his victim as to why Zaid was being transported through his territory. But Gog-Agog begins making wild accusations, prompting Mottom to decapitate her. [42] Some bickering occurs and Jagganoth discloses that the Thorn Knights emerged from one of Mottom's worlds. When he inquires further into the man's identity, Jadis begins divining a prophecy and claims the successor to Throne will be someone by the name of Kill Six Billion Demons.[43]

Wielder of Names[]

Jgganoth does not appear in Wielder of Names, but Mottom briefly explains to Allison the danger Jagganoth poses.[41]

Seeker of Thrones[]

Jagganoth loom

Jagganoth looms over Incubus while discussing the deal.

Jagganoth is seen sitting in front of Incubus's throne in Lethyx, after the latter has made Allison his emissary. When Incubus complains that the Red God is blocking his throne, Jagganoth rebuffs him, stating that the throne did not belong to him. This causes Incubus to launch into an angry tirade about how the other demiurges constantly look down on him, and the legitimacy of his power. He tells Jagganoth that soon, the two of them will bring a reckoning to the others.[44] Jagganoth responds by calling Incubus's deal with Allison peculiar, and expresses skepticism that Allison could stop his work. Incubus reaffirms his belief in Allison's power and status as the true heir, before stating that their pact to start a war has already been made.[45]

Later, while conversing with the moral aspect of Allison's personality within her mind, Incubus mentions having another meeting with "Mister J"[46]

Jagganoth arrival

The Red God's destructive entrance.

King of Swords[]

Jagganoth arrives on Rayuba at the conclusion of The Ring of Power. He cuts through space with his sword, generating an explosion powerful enough destroy the arena and incinerate most attendees. Jagganoth then greets the survivors (composed of Allison and her companions in addition to Solomon, and Jadis) saying that it is 'a beautiful day for a war'.[31]

Breaker of Infinites[]

As Solomon invokes the Pact of the Seven Part World, and the other demiurges arrive, Jagganoth berates them for forgetting the taste of death and the purity found in violence, challenging them all to one last contest.[47] In response, Solomon calls Jagganoth by his birth name of Yaun and asserts that the remaining demiurges have long anticipated this outcome, and are ready to seal him away until the end of time.[20] However, Jagganoth ignores this provocation and turns to Allison, taking off his helmet and asking for her to give him The Master Key. When Allison refuses, Jagganoth explains that his true goal is not to destroy the multiverse, but to destroy Metatron, whom Jagganoth believes is enslaving the world. He says that once Metatron thought of him as an executioner, but that he has now rejected that 'Monomyth'. When Allison still does not acquiesce, Jagganoth dons his helmet and strikes at Solomon.[48]

Jagganoth first strike

Jagganoth launches the first strike at Solomon.

Allison is horrified at the collateral damage and death caused by the attack, but Jagganoth tells her not to mourn the dead, before striking Solomon again. Solomon is able to catch the sword, but with another strike, Jagganoth is able to drive Solomon deep underground into a crater, before turning to face Incubus who has seemingly allied with the other demiurges against Jagganoth. Incubus leaps onto Jagganoth's sword, but then jumps off right before Jagganoth is struck with a spell from Mottom, bringing him to the ground.[49]

Jagganoth arrows

The Red God uses afterimages to fire arrows.

Mammon is next to confront Jagganoth, and calls down a rain of meteors onto the entire battlefield. In response, Jagganoth grabs his bow and notches several arrows.[50] He then generates several afterimages of himself who all simultaneously fire their arrows into the sky. The arrows destroy all the meteors before raining back down onto the demiurges. Jadis creates a field of ice spikes, catching each arrow before they can strike their targets.[32] Jagganoth then leaps out of the smoke and mist to attack Mottom, but she is saved when Solomon erupts from the ground and shatter's Jagganoth's sword on his arm bands.[51]

Jagganoth grabs lightning

Jagganoth prevents Allison from leaving.

Witnessing the destruction, Allison makes the decision to leave with her companions. But before she can teleport, Jagganoth reaches out and grabs the lightning, causing Allison's party to fall back to the earth. Jagganoth then follows up by levitating a sword and sending it directly at Allison, but the attack is deflected by Incubus.[52] However, the blade turns around and forces Incubus into the sea. It is revealed that this technique is a "Supreme Divine Art" and is called the "Blood Draining Sword Soul".[53] The levitating swords then begin to orbit Jagganoth, cutting away at his surroundings. Solomon leaps into the fray, and despite being able to deflect the blades, their combined impact threatens to crush him.[54]

Eight point strike

Solomon pummels Jagganoth with an eight point strike.

Suddenly Jagganoth is hit by a stream of molten metal from Mammon. On fire and with melting armor, Jagganoth picks up a sword but is struck across his head by Solomon who then attacks him with an eight point Ki-Rata strike.[55] All of Jagganoth's armor is destroyed, and Solomon wraps the binding created by Jadis and Mottom around the Red God, bringing him to his knees. At this point, White Chain, who has been observing from a distance, tells Allison that Jagganoth is still too strong for the demiurges to defeat.[39] Although bound, Jagganoth begins to breath fire which scorches Solomon. Yet, as Jagganoth attempts to stand, he is confronted by the newly formed Aspected Chaos. The new combatant strengthens the binding, before Incubus leaps from the water and stabs the binding into Jagganoth's chest.[56]

Jagganoth binding

Incubus stabs the binding in.

When the dust settles, Jagganoth is still standing, but unable to move. He tells Aspected Chaos that the binding will hold him for one minute. Aspected Chaos then questions Jagganoth as to why he really desires the Master Key. Elaborating on his previous statement, Jagganoth reaffirms that he will use the key to destroy Metatron and remake the wheel into a place free of pain and suffering.[24] As Aspected Chaos lifts the remnants of the stadium and a large portion of the earth beneath into space, Jagganoth continues, claiming that Zoss was given the names of God willingly by Metatron, and that Zoss has been keeping the entire wheel within a time loop[57]. Jagganoth explains that Zoss will choose a young man with too much courage and too little sense to be his heir. The heir then defeats the demiurges before taking the throne of heaven. Jagganoth admits that his memory of past cycles is limited, but he does know that he is the one who always defeats the heir, and that he has never lost this battle.[21]

Jagganoth multiple strikes

Jagganoth's war form attacks with many blades.

As the floating arena leaves the atmosphere of Rayuba, Jagganoth declares that he will crush the demiurges and Aspected Chaos all the same.[22] As the binding breaks, Jagganoth's outer skin is seen fracturing and breaking open to reveal his war form. Now greatly enlarged and empowered, Jagganoth quickly gains the advantage, scattering his opponents in all directions. However, Aspected Chaos notices that the binding on Jagganoth's chest is still active and notifies the demiurges of this chance.[58] After Gog-Agog joins the battle by enclosing the entire battlefield with a spherical shell made of her own body, all of Jagganoth's opponents attack him is a simultaneous strike.

Jagganoth attack prepare

Jagganoth prepares to use his ultimate attack

The Red God counters with a blast of energy from his body, but Gog-Agog redoubles her assault and is successful in pinning Jagganoth to the ground. Aspected Chaos then forms a Cubit Spear but Jagganoth taunts that she lacks the strength to best him,[19] at which point Mottom grabs onto the spear followed by the other demiurges. However, before the spear can be thrown, Mottom insults Gog-Agog in a fit of anger, causing the latter to leave the fight.[59] With the mass of worms holding him gone, Jagganoth springs forwards and unleashes an attack called 'Supreme Divine Art, Blood Sated Sword Soul' which decimates Rayuba's surface, destroys the floating battlefield, disperses Aspected Chaos, and grievously wounds Allison and Cio.[38]

Jagganoth kills mammon

The Red God slays the Grand Dragon.

As debris rain back down to Rayuba, Jagganoth descends, having returned to his base form and holding Mammon's decapitated head. After landing, he rips apart Mammon's head and absorbs his key. Then Jagganoth walks to Mottom who has also been grievously injured. She makes one last attempt at killing him with the art, but as Jagganoth is invincible the spell has no effect. Mottom taunts that her death will be a relief, whereas Jagganoth's suffering will continue forever. In response Jagganoth crushes Mottom's body in his fist and absorbs her key too.[60] Turning to confront Incubus, Allison, and Cio, Jagganoth is suddenly attacked by Solomon. Using a Ki-Rata technique that also harms himself, Solomon tears a hole into the boundary between universes and blasts Jagganoth into another world.[61] As Solomon continues to strike him across many worlds, Jagganoth taunts Solomon, daring him to end it and free them both.[62] Finally arriving above Throne, Jagganoth unleashes a large volume of fire, engulfing Solomon. But Solomon retaliates with a final seventy seven point strike and an attack called 'Technique of Relief', enveloping both of them in a large, dark purple sphere.[63][64]

Battle across worlds

Solomon attacks Jagganoth across multiple worlds.

3 years later[]

3 years after the battle on Rayuba, Jagganoth's forces have begun their campaign to destroy the multiverse. The invasion of Throne is to be led by Incubus.[65]

Commentaries[]

  • “The Belligerents have a name for Preem Jagganoth: God’s Monster. You see, to them, he is a divine messenger, blessed by YISUN’s angels to cut away weak and useless things from the world and forge it into a more pure form. To them, he draws all evils into himself, like a great poison, in order to expunge the world of corruption. Most people, I believe, take their worship as further proof of their insanity.” -Peroxes the younger, S.C. 1440[66]
  • "The Wheel Turning King is Supreme Lord of the World - the wheels of his chariot turn in all directions unobstructed. He has completed mastery of Immortality and cultivated ultimate power, and risen above the laws of man and God. His Atum is burnished like adamantium and thirty thousand layers strong. Before him, even the mightiest earthly rulers may be flicked away like fleas." Hidden commentary.[67]

  • “Ox faced, black-tongued, the Wheel Turning King is master of terrestrial powers and war arts. His dominance is unchallenged and he crushes the kings of mankind using only three of his fingers. He wields the legacy of the crimson eyed god with a blazing will and a heated brow. His mighty body is a gate to hold back heaven. He will never touch royalty.” -Psalms.[60]

Notes

Creation and conception

TbilR

God Eater, an early prototype for Jagganoth.

The first conception of Jagganoth can be traced back to KSBD 1F1, where he appears as a tall, hunched figure struck by arrows. By September 2013, this character's appearance had changed drastically and Abbadon began referring to him as God Eater, Tyrant-King of the Juggernauts.[68] Conceptually, God Eater was set to be the seventh demiurge, but little about the character found its way into the comic, and only his armored sleeve, mask, and bestial features remained consistent with Jagganoth's current appearance.

Trivia

  • Abbadon has stated Jagganoth was designed to avoid the "dumb brute" trope in fiction.[5]
  • Jagganoth's name is likely derived from Jagganath, a Hindu deity whose name means "Lord of the Universe". This term is also the root of the word juggernaut, meaning an unstoppable force.
  • The title Chakravartin is a Sanskrit term for an ideal king. It means "one whose wheels are moving," which corresponds to his title of "Wheel-Turning King."

Lore[]

  • "The Red God is rumoured to be a master of Aam'ya'ke, or Death Poetry. Whether any extant examples of his work exist, I scarcely begin to speculate, let alone entertain the idea of seeking them out." - Musko Reeve.[57]
