The Shades are a section of Throne where the light from its immobile sun is blocked by The Red City proper.
Throne's most vicious criminals, thugs, and smugglers tend to congregate in an especially dire part of the city called the Shades, near the shadeside base of the main city mound.[1]
"Them that's young and well and free and yearn to do their part, is tenth as worse as them that's old with hunger in their hearts." is a folk saying attributed to the upper Shades.[2]
